Situation with hiv

Amongst the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia in Russian Federation there is the most huge epidemic of HIV-infection. According to data of Federal research center on prevention and treatment of AIDS the number of registered cases of HIV – infection in Russian Federation for the date 30.06.2009 is 494 074. In St. Petersburg the number of HIV cases is 40 822 for the date 30.06.2009 (http://www.hivrussia.ru/stat/2009/06.shtml).
The leading role of HIV epidemic dissemination in St. Petersburg belongs to injection drug users, the part of which is 80% of all the registered cases of HIV infection (Informational bulletin of St. Petersburg Health Care Committee “HIV infection in St. Petersburg, 2008) . This means that work on prevention of drug using amongst youth and drug use refusal amongst drug users – is the most important parts of HIV prevention activity.
Today’s situation indicates the lack of drug use prevention measures, about the necessity to form new approaches and priorities, consolidation of efforts of State, NGOs, media and business societies in implementation of social initiatives aimed at overcoming of HIV infection dissemination and drug use in St.Petersburg.
